A Danish Zoo Asks for Pets to Feed Predators
Aalborg Zoo in Denmark has started a very unusual program. The zoo is asking local people to donate their old or unwanted pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and even horses, to feed lions, tigers, and other predators. Zoo staff explain that this idea is not new in Europe. In fact, some other zoos have already been using donated animals as food. However, Aalborg Zoo is the first to make a public request like this.
The reason for this project is both practical and ethical. Many families cannot care for their pets anymore. Normally, these animals might be killed without being used. By giving them to the zoo, their bodies can become food for predators. The zoo argues this is a more natural and respectful way to use animals. It also reduces waste and saves money, because the zoo does not need to buy as much meat from farms.
Some people, however, are very upset. Pet lovers say the plan sounds cruel, because people often think of pets as family members.
