A big pine branch bends into a perfect circle. This is the 'Moon Pine', which grew in front of the Kiyomizu Kannon Hall on Ueno Hill, now Ueno Park. Through the ring, we can see Shinobazu Pond and the town beyond, glowing in the sunset. It is from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published in 1857.
The ring looked like a full moon, so people called it the 'Moon Pine'. It was a famous sight in Edo. Hiroshige drew the trunk and branches very large, so they frame the view like a picture frame. Making a nearby object look huge and showing a distant view through it was typical of his bold late style.
The real Moon Pine was lost in a typhoon in the early Meiji era. But in 2012, a new pine with a ring-shaped branch was planted in front of the Kiyomizu Kannon Hall. Many copies of this print were made, so it is in collections around the world. The one you see belongs to the Library of Congress in the United States.
This is a big pine tree in Ueno, Tokyo. One branch makes a round ring. It looks like a full moon. People called it the 'Moon Pine'. The old tree died, but a new Moon Pine is there now.

The Moon Pine, lost in the early Meiji era, returned in front of the Kiyomizu Kannon Hall in 2012. It came back after about 150 years. But its place and size are different, so the view is not exactly like Hiroshige's print.
The series also has 'Kiyomizu Hall and Shinobazu Pond at Ueno', which shows the Moon Pine too. That print shows the hall and the pond in a wide view. Hiroshige drew the same tree both up close and from far away.
The pine looks enormous because its nearby trunk and branches fill the sheet. Hiroshige made the near forms boldly large and let us look through them toward the distant view. Compare it with 'Kiyomizu Hall and Shinobazu Pond at Ueno', which shows the same tree from farther away.
The series is arranged by the four seasons, and this print is in the autumn section. The soft sunset sky and the quiet pond give a calm feeling of the moon-viewing season.
