Seven moons in the rice fields!? A moon in every paddy.
A full moon shines in the night sky. On the mountain slope below, small rice paddies step down like stairs, and a white moon is reflected in each one. This is from Utagawa Hiroshige's Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces. It shows the terraced rice fields of Obasute at Sarashina in Shinano Province, now Nagano. The view of the moon in each paddy, called 'tagoto no tsuki,' has been famous for centuries.
Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces is a series of tall prints. Hiroshige chose one famous place from each province of Japan, a bit like today's prefectures. Mount Kyōdai in the title is the mountain where the moon rises, seen from Obasute. Hiroshige looked down into the valley from high up, and painted the moonlit clouds, the river and the shining paddies in quiet blues and purples.
Rice is still grown in the Obasute terraces today. They became a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 1999 and an Important Cultural Landscape in 2010. Many people still visit to see the moon in the flooded paddies. Many prints were made from the same blocks, so this design is in museums around the world. This impression is in the San Diego Museum of Art.
This is a night in the mountains. There is one moon in the sky. Look at the rice fields. You can see many moons in the water! Each small field shows the moon.
Where a reflected moon appears depends on where you stand, so you usually cannot see it in many paddies at the same time. Hiroshige probably put into one picture what you see as you walk, with the moon moving from paddy to paddy.
In 1688, the haiku poet Matsuo Bashō made a special trip just to see the moon at Sarashina. He wrote about it in a travel diary called Sarashina Kikō. Sarashina was that famous as a place to see the moon.
In 1999, the Obasute rice terraces were named a national Place of Scenic Beauty as 'Obasute (Tagoto no Tsuki).' It is said to be the first time farmland in Japan received this title. The view survives because people still grow rice there.
Next to the signature 'Hiroshige hitsu' is a small label that says 'Hori Take,' meaning 'carved by Take.' He is said to have carved many of Hiroshige's late works. Many carvers were not named on prints, but here the carver left his name.
