A giant spiral in the sea! The Naruto whirlpools swirl right before you.
A huge whirlpool spins at the bottom of the picture. White waves crash on the rocks, and birds fly in the sky. Far away, Awaji Island can be seen faintly. This is from Utagawa Hiroshige's Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces, made in 1855. It shows the famous whirlpools of the Naruto Strait, between Awa Province, now Tokushima, and Awaji Island.
In the Naruto Strait, the tides make the sea higher on one side of the narrow strait than the other, so a very fast current forms. Where this fast water meets slower water nearby, whirlpools appear. Hiroshige used the tall format well, with the wide sea above and a whirlpool right in front of us below. The wave lines are carved in fine curls that seem to spin.
The Naruto whirlpools are still a popular sight. In 1985, the Ōnaruto Bridge was built over the strait, and it has a walkway where you can look down at the whirlpools. Late in life, Hiroshige also designed a large three-sheet print of these whirlpools. Many prints were made from the same blocks, so this design is in museums worldwide, but we do not know who owns the one in this image.
This is the sea in Tokushima. A big spiral of water turns at the bottom. It is a whirlpool! Waves hit the rocks. Today, you can see the whirlpools from a bridge.

In 1857, Hiroshige made three large triptychs on the theme of 'snow, moon and flowers.' Snow was the Kiso mountains, and the moon was a night at Kanazawa. For 'flowers,' he chose the Naruto whirlpools, seeing the white spray of the waves as flowers.
The Naruto whirlpools grow especially large during the strong tides of spring and autumn, and they are said to reach about 20 meters across. The current is one of the fastest in Japan, and it is sometimes called one of the three great tidal currents of the world.
The round seal at the bottom left says 'Koshihei.' It belongs to Koshimuraya Heisuke, the publisher of this series. Ukiyo-e prints hide many 'signatures' besides the artist's, such as the publisher's seal and the censor's seal.
The Ōnaruto Bridge has a walkway called Uzu no Michi. From about 45 meters above the sea, you can look straight down at the whirlpools through glass floors. Today we can compare Hiroshige's imagined whirlpools with the real ones.
