The star is a boatman's hairy leg!? A bold view with no face at all.
On the left is a strong, hairy leg, and at the top are two arms holding a long oar. We cannot see a face anywhere. Beyond them are the blue sea, a Benten shrine among pine trees, and a tall lantern tower. This is from Utagawa Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published in 1858. We become passengers on the ferry boat, looking at the view from right behind the boatman.
The Haneda ferry carried people near the mouth of the Tama River. In the pine trees on the left is a shrine to Benten, a goddess said to protect people at sea. Farther out stands a lantern tower that burned all night and is said to have guided ships. Hiroshige showed only parts of the boatman, very large, with the wide sea beyond. It is a bold design typical of his last years.
The area near the tip of Haneda where this shrine stood is now part of Haneda Airport, and the shrine is said to have been moved to a nearby town. Planes from all over the world now fly over the quiet shore Hiroshige drew. Many prints were made from the same blocks, so this design is in museums worldwide. This one is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
We are in a small boat. We see a man's big leg and arms. His leg is very hairy! We cannot see his face. Far away, there is a shrine by the sea.
Look closely at the boatman's leg and arms. You can see fine hairs drawn one by one. The carver carefully cut around these fine lines with a small knife, leaving them raised on the wooden block. Instead of showing a face, the print makes the boatman feel real down to each hair.
The shape at the bottom right is the side of the boat. We see the view as if we are sitting right behind the boatman. Without noticing, we become passengers inside the picture.
The tip of Haneda where the shrine stood is around today's Haneda Airport. In 1945, people living there are said to have been ordered to leave quickly so the airport could grow, and the shrine was moved. The print also records the shore before the airport.
Benten, or Benzaiten, was first a river goddess in India. In Japan, she became a goddess of water, music, the arts and wealth. That is why she is often found by the sea or on islands in ponds. Haneda's Benten shrine was important to people who worked on the sea.
