If the leader falls, everyone falls! A Bible parable acted out by six men.
Six blind men walk in a line, joined by sticks and hands on shoulders. The leader has already fallen into a ditch, and the man behind him is being pulled down too. Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted it in 1568, a year before he died. It is now in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, Italy.
The painting is based on words of Jesus in the Bible: 'If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.' It teaches that when people who do not know the right way lead others, everyone fails. Bruegel lined the men up so that each one leans a little more than the one before. It looks like one falling movement, step by step.
The painting later entered the collection of the powerful Farnese family of Italy, and it moved to Naples with the family members who inherited it. Today, the English expression 'the blind leading the blind' is still used to describe people who do not understand something trying to guide others who also do not understand.

The church in the background is thought to be the Church of Saint Anne in the village of Sint-Anna-Pede, near Brussels. It still stands today, and some people visit it to see the scene of the painting. Bruegel used a real place as the setting for a parable.
In the 20th century, eye doctors studied this painting. They pointed out that the six men's eyes show different eye conditions. It suggests that Bruegel carefully observed real people when he painted them.
The men also seem to be walking away from the church in the background. Some people read this as showing people who leave the right path of faith. Even one building in the background may carry a meaning.
This picture is painted on linen with paint mixed with glue. At that time, many cloth paintings like this were made as cheap wall hangings. But they wear out easily, so very few have survived. The soft, muted colors also come from this method.
