Please do not think about a white bear. Is it difficult? In a famous study, students tried not to think about a white bear for five minutes. They rang a bell when the bear came into their mind. They rang it more than once a minute.
Later, they could think about the bear freely. Then they thought about it even more. A good tip is to think about something else, like a red car.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How often did the students think of the bear?
They thought of it more than once a minute.
Q3. In this passage, "tip" means ...
A good tip is to ...
Try not to think about a white bear for ten seconds. It is hard. In 1987, the American psychologist Daniel Wegner tested this idea, which came from a line by the Russian writer Dostoevsky. Students spoke their thoughts aloud and rang a bell whenever they thought of a white bear. Even while trying hard not to think about it, they thought of it more than once a minute on average.
When they were later allowed to think about the bear, they thought about it more than students who had been allowed to think about it from the beginning. This is called the rebound effect. Wegner also found that giving people a specific alternative, such as a red car, made the rebound smaller.

Q1. Where did the idea for Wegner's experiment come from?
this idea, which came from a line by the Russian writer Dostoevsky とあるので D。
Q2. What is the "rebound effect" in this passage?
Q3. What advice would Wegner most likely give to someone who wants to stop thinking about a worry?
giving people a specific alternative ... made the rebound smaller
In 1987, Daniel Wegner, inspired by a remark of Dostoevsky's, asked people to speak their thoughts aloud for five minutes while trying not to think of a white bear. Each time the bear came to mind, they rang a bell. They still thought of it more than once a minute. A second finding was odder.
Participants who had first suppressed the thought later reported it more often than those who had been free to think about it all along, a pattern known as the rebound effect. Wegner explained this with his theory of ironic processes. An operating process searches for distracters, while a monitoring process keeps checking for the forbidden thought and so keeps it active. When we are tired or mentally busy, the operating process weakens, and the monitor ends up working against us.
Most of this work used neutral thoughts in the laboratory, which may behave differently from the distressing thoughts seen in clinical settings. A 2001 meta-analysis found that the rebound was reliable but small to moderate, and that increases during suppression were inconsistent. A 2020 meta-analysis of 31 studies showed that such immediate increases appear only under cognitive load, exactly as the theory predicts.
