Can plants in an office help people work better? In one study in the Netherlands and the UK, workers in offices with plants felt happier and more focused. Their productivity went up by about 15 percent.
But other studies did not find the same result. In another study, the best results came when workers chose and decorated their own space. Plants make people feel good, but they are not magic.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Can plants in an office help people work better?
Q2. How much did productivity go up in the study with plants?
Their productivity went up by about 15 percent.
Q3. In this passage, "decorated" means ...
A famous study reported that adding plants to offices increased productivity by about 15 percent. In 2014, researchers reported three field experiments in real offices in the Netherlands and the UK. Workers in offices with plants felt the air was better, said they could concentrate more and were more satisfied.
However, the results are not always the same. In a 2020 study, plants improved performance in a laboratory, but not in a real call center. In a 2010 study, the best results came when workers decorated their own workspace, and the benefit became smaller when someone else changed it. Feeling in control may be as important as the plants.

Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
満足度などは上がるが、the results are not always the same と成績への効果はばらつくと述べているので C。
Q2. What happened in the 2020 study?
plants improved performance in a laboratory, but not in a real call center とあるので A。
Q3. What does the 2010 study suggest?
Feeling in control may be as important as the plants. から D。
Business articles like to say that office plants raise productivity by 15 percent. The figure comes from three field experiments that Nieuwenhuis and colleagues published in 2014. They compared lean offices with green ones in large Dutch and British companies and found that plants improved perceived air quality, self-reported concentration and workplace satisfaction, along with performance on some tasks.
The employees knew the plants had been brought in, though, so blinding was impossible, and expectation effects are hard to rule out. Other studies give mixed results. In 2020, Thatcher and colleagues found that plants improved performance in a laboratory but made no clear difference over weeks to months in a real call center. Back in 1998, a study of 81 participants reported that plants made people feel better, but more plants lowered their scores on timed tasks.
A 2023 study of nine Dutch organizations found improvements in only five of eighteen measures. A 2010 experiment points to a different factor, which is control. Workers who decorated their own space did best, and when others rearranged their choices, the benefit shrank. Plants reliably make an office feel better. What they do for measurable output depends heavily on context.
