When a dog and its owner look into each other's eyes, something happens in their bodies. A Japanese study found that both of them make more oxytocin. This is a hormone that helps people feel close to each other.
Wolves raised by people did not show this. Dogs can also tell a happy face from an angry face. They are very good at reading human faces.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What happened when dogs and owners looked at each other?
both of them make more oxytocin とあるので C。
Q3. In this passage, "tell a happy face from an angry face" means ...
tell A from B は「AとBを見分ける」という重要表現。正解は D。
Dogs are among the best animals at reading human faces and signals. In a 2015 study in Japan, dogs and their owners spent 30 minutes together. The longer a pair gazed at each other, the more the owner's oxytocin, a hormone linked to bonding, increased, and it rose in the dog as well. This did not happen with wolves raised by humans.
In another study, dogs learned to choose happy or angry faces, and they still chose correctly when shown new people or the other half of the face. In addition, dogs used human pointing to find hidden food better than chimpanzees or wolves did.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Dogs are among the best animals at reading human faces and signals が主題文なので D。
Q2. How long did the dogs and owners spend together in the 2015 study?
dogs and their owners spent 30 minutes together とあるので B。
Q3. What can we infer from the result with wolves?
正解は A。
The test lasted 30 minutes. Researchers at Azabu University tracked how long each dog gazed at its owner. In their 2015 paper in Science, owners whose dogs looked at them longer showed bigger increases in oxytocin, a hormone linked to bonding, measured in their urine. The dogs' levels went up as well.
When the team sprayed oxytocin into the noses of female dogs, the dogs gazed longer at their owners, and the owners' oxytocin then rose. That looks like a loop in which each partner's attention boosts the other. Wolves raised by hand showed no such response. Other work points the same way. Dogs trained on pictures of half-faces could tell happy from angry expressions on faces they had never seen, and dogs did better than chimpanzees and wolves at using a human's pointing gesture.
Parts of this evidence are weaker than they look. The nasal spray worked only in females, the methods for measuring oxytocin are disputed, and some researchers report that wolves raised by people can use pointing under certain conditions. If so, dogs' skill at reading us may come partly from a life spent with people, and not only from tens of thousands of years of domestication.
