Why does 980 yen look much cheaper than 1,000 yen? The difference is only 20 yen. Scientists say our brain reads numbers from left to right. It often decides the size of a price by the first number.
So 980 feels like "nine hundred something," but 1,000 feels like "one thousand." This is called the left-digit effect. In one study, a dress sold better at 39 dollars than at 34 dollars!

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How does our brain often decide the size of a price?
It often decides the size of a price by the first number.
Q3. In this passage, "sold better" means ...
Prices like 980 yen or 1,980 yen are everywhere, and there is a scientific reason for them. We read numbers from left to right, so our brain tends to judge a price mainly by its leftmost digit. This is called the left-digit effect.
In a 2005 study, people felt that the gap between 2.99 and 4.00 dollars was larger than it really was. In another experiment, researchers sent clothing catalogs to different customers. The same dress was priced at 34, 39 or 44 dollars.
The 39-dollar version sold the most, even more than the cheaper one. Prices ending in 9 may tell shoppers that something is a good deal. Used cars show the same effect. Their prices drop sharply when the mileage passes a round number such as 60,000 miles.

Q1. What is the left-digit effect?
our brain tends to judge a price mainly by its leftmost digit. This is called the left-digit effect.
Q2. In the catalog experiment, which price sold the most?
The 39-dollar version sold the most, even more than the cheaper one.
Q3. Why might a used car with 60,000 miles sell for less than one with 59,999 miles?
Used cars show the same effect.
Price tags reading 980 yen or 2.99 dollars are so common that shoppers rarely notice them, but they exploit a predictable habit of the mind. Because we read numbers from left to right, we judge the size of a price largely by its leftmost digit and pay too little attention to the rest. In a 2005 study, Thomas and Morwitz found that people saw the difference between 2.99 and 4.00 dollars as larger than it really was.
When Anderson and Simester mailed clothing catalogs listing the same dress at 34, 39 or 44 dollars, the 39-dollar version sold best, beating a cheaper price. They also found some evidence that adding a "sale" sign to a 9-ending price weakened the effect of the 9. Both, it seems, tell shoppers they are getting a bargain.
An analysis of used-car auctions found the same pattern, with sharp price drops at each 10,000-mile threshold. Charm pricing does not work everywhere, though. Luxury brands often prefer round numbers because they suggest quality, and a 9 at the end may also hint at lower quality. And little solid research explains habits tied to particular cultures, such as the popularity of prices ending in 8 in Japan.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What happened when a "sale" sign was combined with a 9-ending?
adding a "sale" sign to a 9-ending price weakened the effect of the 9 とあるので D。
Q3. Why might a luxury brand choose a price like 10,000 yen instead of 9,980 yen?
Luxury brands often prefer round numbers because they suggest quality とあり、末尾の9は品質の低さをにおわせうるとも述べているので A。
