Many Japanese learners think, "I must sound like a native speaker." But is that true? In a study in Canada, native English speakers listened to learners with strong accents. They wrote down what they heard. Most of the time, they understood the words correctly.
Also, today many people use English with other non-native speakers. So your goal can be clear English that people understand, not a perfect native accent.

Q1. What did the listeners in the study do?
They wrote down what they heard. とあるので B。
Q2. What was the result of the study?
Most of the time, they understood the words correctly. とあるので D。
Q3. What goal does the writer suggest?
your goal can be clear English that people understand, not a perfect native accent とあるので A。
Japanese learners often feel they must sound like native speakers to be understood. Research suggests otherwise. In a 1995 study in Canada, 18 native English listeners heard ten Chinese-speaking learners talk freely. They rated each speaker's accent and how easy the speech was to understand, and they also wrote down what they heard. Although many accent ratings were at the strong end, the listeners' transcriptions were generally quite accurate.
So a strong accent does not always make speech hard to understand. In addition, English is now used more often between non-native speakers than with native speakers. Researchers studying English as a lingua franca argue that clear communication and adjusting to your listener matter more than copying a native accent.

Q1. Who were the speakers in the 1995 study?
ten Chinese-speaking learners talk freely とあるので C。
Q2. What does the sentence "a strong accent does not always make speech hard to understand" summarize?
直前の「なまりの評価は強い側にも多かったが、書き取りは正確だった」を言い換えているので A。
Q3. What do researchers of English as a lingua franca think is important?
clear communication and adjusting to your listener matter more とあるので D。
Japanese learners often assume that anything short of a native accent will lead to misunderstanding, but applied linguistics challenges this assumption. In 1995, Munro and Derwing asked 18 native English listeners to evaluate free speech from ten Mandarin-speaking learners. Listeners rated accentedness and comprehensibility on nine-point scales and transcribed what they heard. Although accent ratings ranged widely, with many at the strong end, transcription accuracy was generally high.
The researchers concluded that accent, comprehensibility and intelligibility are related but distinct, and that a strong accent does not necessarily reduce intelligibility. The way English is used has also shifted. Non-native users now far outnumber native speakers, and in 2001 Seidlhofer called for describing English as a lingua franca in its own right rather than measuring it only against native norms.
Holliday later criticized "native-speakerism," an ideology that treats native-speaker teachers as the model for English and its teaching and can lead to stereotyping of other teachers and learners. There are caveats. The 1995 study was small, and lingua franca research is largely descriptive, with limited evidence that lingua franca-oriented teaching improves outcomes. Some learners may also prefer native models. Intelligibility, though, is a realistic goal.
