Some learners think English captions are cheating. They watch English dramas with no captions at all. But research says captions help. When learners watch English videos with English captions, they understand more and learn more new words.
Captions show how the sounds match the words. Here is a good way to use them. First, watch a scene with English captions. Then, watch the same scene again without captions and listen carefully.

Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
research says captions help とあり、字幕の効果と使い方を説明しているので B。
Q2. What should you do after watching a scene with English captions?
Then, watch the same scene again without captions とあるので C。
Q3. In this passage, "captions" are ...
英語の動画に付ける英語の文字=同じ言語の字幕なので A。
Many serious learners believe that watching English videos without captions is the best training for their ears. However, a 2013 meta-analysis by Belgian researchers, which combined the results of many experiments, found the opposite. Learners who watched videos with captions in the same language understood more and learned more vocabulary than those who watched without captions. One reason is that spoken English often runs words together, so it is hard to tell where one word ends. Captions help learners connect the sounds with the written words.
However, there are two cautions. Learners may simply read the captions without listening, and some studies tested understanding while captions were still on. So after watching with captions, it is a good idea to listen to the same scene again without them.

Q1. What did the 2013 meta-analysis find?
Learners who watched videos with captions ... understood more and learned more vocabulary とあるので D。
Q2. Why can spoken English be hard to follow, according to the passage?
spoken English often runs words together, so it is hard to tell where one word ends とあるので D。
Q3. Why does the writer suggest listening again without captions?
字幕を読むだけになりがち、字幕ありで理解度を測った研究もある、という注意点を受けての提案なので B。
In 2013, Montero Perez and colleagues pooled experiments that compared videos with same-language captions and videos with no text at all. Captions won clearly, with large advantages for both comprehension and vocabulary learning.
A 2010 study of American university students learning Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Chinese reported similar benefits. That surprises the many committed learners who switch the text off, convinced that struggling without help is the best ear training. The probable mechanism is word segmentation. In connected speech the boundaries between words blur, and captions let viewers map the sound stream onto written forms.
Separate research shows that even a single documentary can teach some unknown words, with gains depending on how often a word appears and on the viewer's existing vocabulary. Two details complicate the story. Eye-tracking shows that learners spend a lot of time reading the captions, and in many experiments comprehension was tested while the captions were still on screen.
So the scores reflect overall understanding more than pure listening skill. Most participants were also intermediate university students. Captions work best as training wheels. Watch a clip with them first, then watch it again without them.
