Are dogs or cats smarter? In 2017, scientists counted the nerve cells in the cerebral cortex, the thinking part of the brain. A cat had about 250 million. Dogs had about 430 to 630 million, so about twice as many.
But the scientists studied only two dogs and one cat. Also, dogs are good at working with people, and cats are good at hunting alone. So we cannot easily say which animal is smarter.

Q2. About how many nerve cells did the cat have in its cerebral cortex?
A cat had about 250 million.
Q3. In this passage, "alone" means ...
Neurons are too many to count one by one, so a Brazilian neuroscientist developed a clever method. The brain is dissolved into a uniform "soup," and the nuclei in a small sample are counted to estimate the total. In 2017, this method was used on eight carnivores, including dogs, cats, lions and brown bears. A cat's cerebral cortex had about 250 million neurons, while dogs had between about 430 and 630 million.
But a brown bear, whose cortex is about ten times larger than a cat's, had about the same number of neurons as the cat. The researchers suggest that large hunters may not have enough energy to support many neurons. However, only two dogs and one cat were examined.

Q1. How were the neurons counted?
The brain is dissolved into a uniform "soup," and the nuclei in a small sample are counted とあるので D。
Q2. What was surprising about the brown bear?
cortex is about ten times larger than a cat's, had about the same number of neurons as the cat とあるので B。
Q3. Why does the writer mention that only two dogs and one cat were examined?
Arguments over whether dogs or cats are cleverer rarely involve data, but a 2017 study offered some. Researchers dissolved brain tissue into a uniform suspension, stained the cell nuclei and counted them in samples to estimate the number of neurons in the cerebral cortex of eight carnivore species. A cat had roughly 250 million.
Dogs had about 430 million in a small mixed breed and 630 million in a golden retriever, the highest of any animal examined. Only two dogs and one cat were studied, though. More neurons may also raise a brain's capacity without deciding how intelligent an animal is, and each species excels at different tasks. Cortex size and neuron number did not rise together. A raccoon, with a cortex about the size of a cat's, averaged 440 million.
A lion's cortex is roughly twice as large as a dog's, yet its count was similar, around 550 million. The oddest case was the brown bear, whose cortex was about ten times the size of a cat's but held about the same number of neurons. The authors proposed a trade-off. Large predators face high energy costs and unreliable meals, which may limit how many costly neurons they can afford.
