The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will be announced on October 5. Last year, the prize went to three scientists, including Shimon Sakaguchi from Japan. Their work was about special cells that stop our body's defense system from attacking our own body.
Sakaguchi made his first discovery in 1995, so the prize came 30 years later. This is common. The Nobel Prize usually goes to old discoveries that have been checked for a long time.

The winners of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will be announced on October 5. To understand the prize better, it helps to look at last year's winners. In 2025, the prize was given to Shimon Sakaguchi of Osaka University and two American scientists, Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell. Their work explained regulatory T cells, which act like brakes on the immune system.
Without them, the immune system can attack the body itself and cause autoimmune diseases. Sakaguchi first reported these cells in 1995, at a time when most scientists did not accept his idea. In 2001 and 2003, the gene Foxp3 was found and linked to these cells. As this example shows, Nobel Prizes usually honor discoveries made decades earlier.

Q1. What is the main role of regulatory T cells?

Q2. Which statement about Sakaguchi's 1995 report is true?
at a time when most scientists did not accept his idea とあるので C。
Q3. What can we infer about the 2026 prize?
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is scheduled to be announced on October 5, the first of the six prizes. Rather than guessing the winners, it may be more useful to understand how prize-winning research should be read, using the 2025 award as an example. That prize went to Shimon Sakaguchi, Mary Brunkow, and Fred Ramsdell for their work on peripheral immune tolerance. In 1995, Sakaguchi showed that removing a particular group of T cells from mice triggered autoimmune disease, challenging the dominant view of the time.
In 2001, Brunkow and Ramsdell identified the gene behind a mouse strain with severe autoimmune symptoms and named it Foxp3, and in 2003 Sakaguchi's team showed that Foxp3 controls the development of regulatory T cells. The thirty-year gap between discovery and award is typical, because the committee tends to wait until a finding has been thoroughly confirmed. Predictions are therefore rarely reliable, especially since the details of the selection stay secret for fifty years. Readers should also note that therapies that increase or reduce regulatory T cells are mostly still in clinical trials rather than established treatments.
