The shortest answer that works

Japan is a long chain of mountainous islands, and most of the land is too steep to live on.

The standard explanation

Japan stretches about three thousand kilometers from north to south, so the climate ranges from subarctic to subtropical. Around two thirds of the land is forested mountain, which pushes almost everyone onto a narrow strip of flat land near the coast. A 2023 recount put the number of islands at 14,125.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Japan is a chain of islands stretching about three thousand kilometers from north to south, which is why the northern island has serious winters while the southern islands are subtropical, and why the cherry blossom front takes more than two months to move up the country.

The more important fact for daily life is the terrain: roughly two thirds of the land is mountain covered in forest, and very little of the rest is flat. That single fact explains an enormous amount. It is why the population is concentrated in a few coastal plains, why cities are dense and houses small, why the railway network is built around tunnels, and why rivers are short and steep and flood quickly.

In 2023 the national mapping agency recounted the islands using detailed digital data and arrived at 14,125, more than double the 6,852 that had been quoted since 1987. The country did not change; the counting method did.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhy did the number of islands double?

Because the counting method changed, not the coastline. The 1987 figure was produced from paper maps; the 2023 recount used detailed digital geospatial data with a consistent rule, which picked up many small islands the older method had merged or missed.

QHow much of Japan can people actually live on?

A small share. The habitable flat land is concentrated in a handful of plains, above all the one around Tokyo, and that is where the population and the industry sit. The rest is mountain, forest and steep valley.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHJapan is a small country.

FACTBy land area it is mid-sized, larger than Germany or the United Kingdom. What is small is the flat, habitable part, which is why it feels crowded.
