Mountain Day, on August 11th, is the newest public holiday in Japan. It was passed in 2014 and took effect in 2016, bringing the total to sixteen. What makes it unusual is that it commemorates nothing. Most Japanese holidays sit on a date for a reason: an emperor's birthday, a constitutional milestone, an imperial harvest rite. This one has no event behind it.
The law simply says it is a day to become familiar with mountains and to give thanks for their blessings, which is about as open as a holiday definition gets. The campaign for it came from mountaineering and forestry groups, and June was considered before August was chosen, partly because placing it just before the Obon period gives many workers a longer run of days off.
That practical reasoning was discussed openly. Japan is around seventy percent mountainous, so there is a case for the holiday. But if a visitor asks what people do on Mountain Day, the honest answer is that most people do not go anywhere near a mountain.

Some point to the shape of the numeral 11 resembling two trees, which is a story rather than an official explanation.
