Golden Week is the cluster of public holidays that runs from the 29th of April to the 5th of May. Four holidays fall in that stretch: Showa Day, Constitution Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day. Depending on how the calendar falls, and on whether a company grants the working days in between, it can become anything from four days to ten.
The consequence is the important part. Japanese workers take very little individual paid leave, so when a block of holidays arrives, the entire country travels at once. Shinkansen reserved seats sell out weeks ahead, motorways jam for tens of kilometers, domestic flights double in price and popular sights are shoulder to shoulder.
If you are visiting Japan and can choose your dates, avoid it. If you are here during it, book everything early, travel against the flow, and treat any city you are already in as the best place to be.

Because taking individual leave is culturally difficult in many workplaces, so the fixed holidays are when people can actually go. Government campaigns to stagger holidays regionally have had limited effect.

QIs anything closed?
Very little. Shops, restaurants and attractions are open and busy, since this is their peak season. Some small family-run businesses close, and government offices, banks and clinics are shut on the holidays themselves.
