In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
In an omiai, a go-between arranges for two people to meet, having already exchanged profiles and photographs, with marriage as the stated purpose. They talk, usually over a meal, and each side then says yes or no. Either can decline. It was the main route to marriage before the war, but love matches overtook it in the mid-1960s. The same idea survives today through marriage agencies and apps.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
Omiai is often translated as arranged marriage, which gives the wrong impression. Nobody is married off against their will. An omiai is a formal introduction: a go-between, traditionally a relative, a boss or a neighbor, matches two people who both want to marry, passes on a written profile and a photograph from each side, and arranges a meeting, often at a hotel lounge or a restaurant.
The two talk, sometimes with the families present at first, then alone. Afterward each gives an answer through the go-between, and either may say no without explanation. Before the war this was how most people married.
Survey figures from the national institute that studies population show love matches overtaking omiai in the mid-1960s, and arranged introductions falling to a small share by the 1980s. The function did not disappear, though. Marriage agencies, parents' matchmaking events and dating apps now do what the go-between used to do, with a fee instead of an obligation.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QSo is this an arranged marriage?
Not in the sense the English phrase usually carries. The introduction is arranged; the marriage is not. Both people can refuse after the first meeting, and refusing is common. What was arranged was the chance to meet someone vetted by a third party.
QDoes anyone still do this?
The traditional version with a family go-between is now rare. The modern equivalents are busy: marriage agencies that screen members' income and marital status, group events called konkatsu parties, and apps. Some local governments even run matchmaking services, because of the falling birth rate.
QWhat was the go-between's role after the wedding?
Traditionally the nakodo continued as a kind of guarantor of the marriage, appeared at the wedding, and might be consulted if the couple had trouble. Couples also sent them seasonal gifts for years. Most weddings today have no go-between at all, or only a ceremonial one.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHOmiai means families marry their children off without consent.
FACTBoth sides can and often do refuse after the first meeting; what the go-between arranges is an introduction between two people who have already said they want to marry.
