The standard explanation

In a Shinto wedding, the couple stand before the shrine's deity in traditional dress. A priest purifies them, the groom reads a vow, and the central act is san-san-kudo: each drinks three times from three cups. Only close family usually attends. Many Japanese couples choose a chapel-style ceremony instead, despite very few being Christian.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

A Shinto wedding takes place at a shrine, with the couple in traditional dress: the bride in a white kimono with a white headdress, the groom in montsuki hakama. A priest purifies everyone present, offerings are made to the deity, and the groom reads a vow aloud.

The central ritual is san-san-kudo, three-three-nine times: the couple each drink three sips from each of three stacked cups of sake, and then family members drink too, which formally joins the two households rather than only the two people. Attendance is usually limited to close family. Now the part that confuses visitors.

Surveys consistently show that a large share of Japanese couples choose a Western chapel-style ceremony with a white dress, in a country where Christians are well under one percent of the population. For most couples the chapel is chosen for how it looks and feels, not as a statement of faith, and nobody here finds that contradictory.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhy do non-Christians marry in a chapel?

Because the ceremony is treated as a form rather than a doctrine. The white dress and the aisle are widely seen as beautiful, and commercial wedding venues built chapels to meet that demand.

QWhat is san-san-kudo?

Three cups, three sips each, nine in total. Three and nine are auspicious odd numbers, and sharing the sake is understood as sealing the bond between the couple and between their families.

QWhat does the bride's white headdress mean?

There are two types. The rounded wataboshi covers the face until the ceremony ends. The tsunokakushi is explained as covering the horns of jealousy, an explanation many people now find dated.
