The standard explanation

Shiromuku is a formal bridal kimono that is white from top to bottom, including the heavy outer robe, the sash and the socks. Brides usually wear it for a Shinto wedding ceremony at a shrine. The white is often explained as a sign of purity and a fresh start. Most brides rent it, and many change into a colorful kimono or a Western dress for the reception.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Shiromuku is the white kimono that a bride wears at a traditional Japanese wedding. Everything is white: the long outer robe, the kimono under it, the sash, and even the tabi socks. On her head, the bride wears either a large white hood called a wataboshi or a smaller band called a tsunokakushi.

People often say the white stands for purity, and that the bride is like a blank sheet, ready to take on the ways of her new family. That idea sounds old-fashioned to many young people now, but the look itself is still popular for photos at shrines.

Today, Western-style ceremonies are more common in Japan, so some couples do both: a shiromuku for the ceremony and a white dress for the reception. I think the pure white looks beautiful at a shrine.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Isn't white a funeral color in Japan too?

In old Japan, white was indeed worn for funerals too, and it is still used for the clothes of the dead. But in Japan it is linked with purity and new beginnings in general, so it works for both. At funerals today, mourners wear black.

Q

What is the hood on the bride's head for?

The large white hood is called a wataboshi. It was once worn to keep off dust and cold, and at a wedding it is said to hide the bride's face from everyone but the groom until the ceremony is over. Some brides wear a smaller band called a tsunokakushi instead.

Q

Do people buy one, or rent it?

Most brides rent. A full set is very expensive and is worn only once, so wedding halls and photo studios rent it out along with the hair, makeup and dressing.
