In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
A nakodo introduced two families for an arranged marriage, miai, carried messages during the courtship, and traditionally stood beside the couple at the ceremony as a kind of formal witness and guarantor. The role was often filled by a boss, a relative, or a respected older couple. As arranged marriages became rare and companies stopped urging employees toward them, the role has nearly disappeared; most modern weddings have no nakodo at all.

Older Japanese wedding photographs almost always show one extra couple standing beside the bride and groom, more formally dressed than any other guest. That is the nakodo, the go-between. Their job began well before the wedding: introducing two people for a miai, an arranged meeting, then relaying opinions and smoothing over concerns between the families during the courtship.
On the day itself they stood as witnesses and, in a sense, guarantors that the match was sound, and they were thanked with a gift and a formal greeting at the reception. Bosses often played this role for employees, which tied the company into the marriage in a mild but real way.
Government survey data tracked a clear crossover: arranged marriages outnumbered love marriages until the 1960s, then fell steadily, and today national fertility surveys put arranged marriages at well under one in ten. With that shift, and with companies stepping back from employees' private lives, the nakodo role has largely disappeared; some couples still hire a professional stand-in nakodo purely for the wedding photos and formality.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QIs a nakodo the same as a wedding officiant?
No. The nakodo was a go-between and witness with a social role before and during the marriage, not a religious or legal officiant. A Shinto priest or a chapel minister performs the ceremony itself.
QDo any couples still have one?
Very few, and when they do it is often a rental nakodo, a professional hired for the day rather than someone who actually arranged the match. It signals a traditional style of wedding rather than a real go-between relationship.
QHow were arranged marriages actually arranged?
The nakodo or the families gathered resumes and photos, arranged a formal first meeting called miai over tea or a meal, and the couple then dated for a period, with the nakodo checking in, before deciding whether to marry.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHArranged marriage with a nakodo is still the common way Japanese people marry.
FACTNational surveys show arranged marriages have been a small minority since the 1960s, and today they account for well under one in ten marriages; the nakodo role has followed the same decline.
