In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
After the formal reception ends, a livelier second party often follows at a restaurant or bar, called nijikai. Guests pay a flat fee on the spot, commonly around 4,000 to 6,000 yen, instead of the cash gift expected at the reception. Friends of the couple, not family, run it as organizers, with games, quizzes and a photo slideshow. Many nijikai guests were not invited to the formal reception at all, since it lets the couple include coworkers and friends more casually.
As a short speech

A Japanese wedding often has two very different parties on the same day. The reception, hiroen, is formal: assigned seats, a set course meal, speeches, and a cash gift in a decorated envelope from every guest. The nijikai that follows is the opposite on purpose.
It is usually at a casual restaurant or bar, guests pay a flat fee at the door instead of a gift, and there is no seating chart. The organizers are close friends of the couple, not family, and they run party games, quizzes about the newlyweds, and a slideshow of childhood photos, often ending with everyone throwing streamers.
Because it is cheaper and less formal, couples frequently invite a wider circle to the nijikai than to the reception itself — coworkers, university friends, people they could not fit into the reception's guest list or budget. Not every couple holds one; some prefer to end the day with the reception alone.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QDo I need to bring a gift to a nijikai?
No cash gift envelope is expected; the flat entry fee covers the food, drinks and venue. Bringing a small personal gift is fine but not required.
QHow much does it usually cost?
Roughly 4,000 to 6,000 yen per person in most cities, sometimes less for those who only attend the nijikai. The organizers announce the amount when they send the invitation.
QCan I go to the nijikai without attending the wedding itself?
Yes, and it's common. Nijikai guest lists are often separate from and larger than the reception's, precisely so more friends can join at least part of the celebration.
