The shortest answer that works

Goshugi is cash given at a wedding, in new notes, in a special envelope, in an amount set by custom.

The standard explanation

Guests at a Japanese wedding give money rather than a gift. The amount follows convention, commonly thirty thousand yen for a friend, more for relatives. The notes should be new, the total should not be an even number that divides in two, and the money goes in a decorated envelope handed in at a reception desk.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

At a Japanese wedding you give money, and there are enough conventions around it that getting it wrong is easy. The amount is set by relationship rather than by generosity: thirty thousand yen is the standard for a friend or colleague, more for a relative, less for a young person still studying.

The number matters. Even amounts that split cleanly in two are avoided because division suggests the couple separating, which is why thirty thousand is standard and twenty thousand is awkward, though two notes of ten thousand plus one of five thousand is a common way around it.

The notes must be new and unfolded, which means a trip to a bank, and the envelope must be the right kind: for a wedding, one with a cord tied in a knot that cannot be undone. You write your name on the front, the amount inside, and hand it over at the reception desk with both hands. In return you get a meal, gifts to take home, and the couple's thanks.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhat if I can't get new notes?

Banks exchange them at a counter or a machine, and some convenience store machines will too. If you truly cannot, smooth the notes and choose the cleanest you have; it is noticed but forgiven, especially from a foreign guest.

QHow do I know how much to give?

Ask another guest who knows the couple, which is completely normal and is what Japanese guests do. As a rough guide, thirty thousand for a friend, fifty thousand or more for a close relative, ten thousand for a student.
