on pins and needles は「（心配や期待で）気が気でない、そわそわして落ち着かない」という意味です。ピンや針の上に座っていたら、じっとしていられませんよね。試験の合否、面接の結果、大切な人からの連絡を待っているときなど、先が気になって落ち着かない状態を表します。be on pins and needles の形で使うのが一般的。on edge が「ピリピリ・いらいら」に近いのに対し、こちらは「ハラハラ・ドキドキして待つ」ニュアンスが強い表現です。
