💡 どんな意味・どんなときに使う？
would rather A than B は「BするよりむしろAしたい」という意味の表現です。A と B にはどちらも動詞の原形を置きます。会話では I'd rather と短縮され、than B を省略して I'd rather not.（遠慮しておきます）のように使うこともよくあります。否定形は would rather not ~ で、not の位置が had better と同じく後ろになる点に注意しましょう。また would rather の後ろに S + 過去形を続けると、I'd rather you didn't smoke here.（ここでたばこを吸わないでほしいのですが）のような仮定法の表現になります。
