Many people believe that the oldest child is serious and the youngest child is spoiled. But is this true?
Researchers looked at data from about 20,000 people in the United States, Britain and Germany. They found no clear differences in personality between first, second or later children. The only difference was very small: firstborns scored a little higher on intelligence tests. So your birth order does not decide who you are.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many people's data did the researchers look at?
data from about 20,000 people とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "spoiled" describes a child who ...
serious(まじめ)な長子と対比されているので D。
"You're the oldest, so you must be responsible." Comments like this are common around the world. To test them, researchers in Germany analyzed national survey data from about 20,000 people in the United States, Britain and Germany. They compared children from different families and also compared brothers and sisters within the same family.
Birth order had no consistent effect on extraversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness or imagination. Firstborns only scored slightly higher on intelligence tests. A Norwegian study suggests that even this IQ difference may come from how children are raised. People who were born second but grew up as the oldest, because an older sibling died young, had IQ scores similar to firstborns.

Q1. What did the researchers in Germany conclude?
Birth order had no consistent effect on ...
Q2. How did the researchers compare people?
They compared children from different families and also compared brothers and sisters within the same family.
Q3. What does the Norwegian study suggest?
正解は A。
Firstborns are supposed to be responsible, and the youngest are said to be spoiled. To test such claims properly, Rohrer and colleagues analyzed large national panel studies from the United States, Britain and Germany, covering roughly 20,000 people. They compared firstborns and laterborns from different households, and they also compared siblings raised together in the same family. Neither design revealed any consistent effect of birth order on extraversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness or imagination.
With a sample that large, even tiny differences should have shown up. The one reliable pattern was a slight decline in measured intelligence, and in self-rated intellect, from earlier to later siblings. A separate analysis of about 370,000 American high school students also found negligible links between birth order and personality. Norwegian research traces the IQ gap to social rank in the family and not to biology.
Second-born men who became the eldest after an older sibling died scored much like firstborns. Even so, birth order explained only a few percent of IQ differences between siblings. So why does the stereotype feel accurate? Parents may mistake age differences for personality differences, and confirmation bias leads people to remember only the examples that fit.
