Why Do Some Hugs Stay in Our Memory?

1In a large study in the UK, almost 70 percent of adults said they remember a special hug. They remember it because it made them feel good.

2Researchers at the University of Bristol looked at answers from more than 15,000 adults. The answers came from an online survey about touch in 2020. The study was published on October 28.

3The most common reason was comfort. Many people said the hug gave them comfort or support, or made them feel understood.

4People with more empathy were more likely to remember a special hug. Empathy is the ability to understand other people's feelings. People who are not comfortable being close to others were less likely to remember one.

5The study only shows links, not causes. About 75 percent of the people in it were women. The researchers said the results may be different in places with other customs about touch.

文法ポイント:be more likely to ~(~する可能性が高い・~しやすい)

〈be likely to + 動詞の原形〉で「~しやすい」、比較の more をつけた be more likely to は「(ほかより)~しやすい」、反対は be less likely to。 People with more empathy were more likely to remember a special hug.
