Godzilla Minus Zero Doubles Its Predecessor's Opening Pace

1Godzilla Minus Zero opened in Japan on November 3 and earned about twice as much at the box office as its predecessor did at the same point. The figure was announced at a stage event on opening day. As of 11 a.m., ticket sales had reached 201 percent of those for Godzilla Minus One, not counting early screenings.

2Godzilla Minus One, released in 2023, earned 7.65 billion yen in Japan and won an Academy Award for visual effects. Takashi Yamazaki, who directed both films, also wrote the new movie and led its visual effects. Chunichi Sports reported that the film is showing at 448 theaters, including 65 with IMAX screens.

3Ryunosuke Kamiki, who plays the lead role, thanked the audience and said the result showed how much people love Godzilla. When Kamiki told the director the figure was 200 percent, Yamazaki smiled and said it was crazy. Minami Hamabe said she had not expected her character to appear in the sequel and was surprised to have such a big part.

4The new film is set two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One. It also features King Ghidorah, Godzilla's old enemy. At the end of the event, its silhouette appeared on the screen and its roar was played. Kamiki said that the moment he saw King Ghidorah, he felt they could never win. The film is scheduled to open in North America on November 6.
