Volunteers Leave NASA's Mock Mars Habitat After 378 Days
1Four volunteers left NASA's pretend Mars home at Johnson Space Center in Houston on Saturday, October 31, ending 378 days cut off from the outside world. They had entered the habitat on October 19, 2025. It was the second yearlong mission of NASA's CHAPEA program, which studies how crews might cope on a real trip to Mars. The first crew came out in July 2024.
2The crew was made up of commander Ross Elder, medical officer Ellen Ellis, science officer Matthew Montgomery and flight engineer James Spicer. They lived in a 3D-printed building of about 1,700 square feet, or roughly 158 square meters. It has private rooms, a kitchen, a fitness area, two bathrooms and areas for growing crops.
3During the mission, the crew grew plants, managed limited supplies and carried out simulated spacewalks in suits. For these practice walks, called Marswalks, the crew left the main habitat but stayed inside the hangar that holds it, so the four did not go outdoors for more than a year. They also had to do their own haircuts, deal with plumbing problems and take their own blood samples. Elder compared the experience to extreme camping.
4The volunteers stayed in touch with their families only by email. Each message was held back on purpose to copy the delay a crew on Mars would face. NASA said the mission's data could help it build support systems for crews whose messages from Earth take up to 45 minutes to arrive.
5Scientists will now look at the data on the crew's health and work gathered over the year. NASA said the results could show how having only a set amount of food and fitness gear affects what a Mars mission can achieve. The four will spend two weeks on tests and interviews with NASA scientists.

本文の crews whose messages from Earth take up to 45 minutes to arrive がその例(地球からのメッセージが届くまでに最大45分かかる乗組員)。
