Want Closeness, Fear It: A Link to Problematic Social Media Use
1Adults who long for close relationships but fear relying on others are the most likely to struggle with social media use, a U.S. study suggests. Chris Bjornsen and Allen Harbaugh of Longwood University in Virginia published the findings in the journal PLOS One on October 21.
2The team surveyed 555 U.S. adults aged 18 to 79 through an online questionnaire. The questionnaire measured two things about how people feel in close relationships. One was anxiety, or worrying that others will not be there for you. The other was avoidance, or feeling uncomfortable with closeness. The researchers also asked whether people used social media impulsively or turned to it when they felt down.
3From the answers, people fell into four profiles that match well-known attachment styles: secure, avoidant, anxious and fearful. Problem use was lowest in the secure group, who trust others and feel comfortable being close. It was higher in the avoidant group and higher still in the anxious group. It was highest in the fearful group, whose members scored very high on both anxiety and avoidance.
4The authors suggested that people high in anxiety may seek reassurance on social media because it is easy to reach and can feel less threatening. Fearful people may also search for comfort online, but they may not feel reassured by it, they wrote.
5The study shows a link, not cause and effect. The authors noted that it included only U.S. citizens and that the profiles need to be tested in other studies. The anxious and fearful groups were younger, with average ages of about 35, compared with 42 to 44 in the other two groups.

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 whose(人+whose+名詞)
本文の the fearful group, whose members scored very high on both anxiety and avoidance は「恐れ型のグループ、そのメンバーは不安と回避の両方がとても高かった」。
