Parapara Finds a New Generation of Fans

1Parapara, a dance that was popular in Japan's Heisei era, is reaching a new generation, a survey suggests. Wakamono Research, a Japanese company that studies young people, surveyed more than 500 people aged 14 to 20 online. The company announced the results in a press release on October 27.

2In the survey, 61.3 percent said they knew parapara, while 38.7 percent did not. Many participants who knew it mentioned Snow Man and the music video for its hit song CHARISMAX. Others said they had come across the dance in short videos on TikTok, Instagram or YouTube.

3When asked if they wanted to try it, 32.3 percent said yes, or about one in three. Some said the moves looked easy to learn, and others said it would be fun to do with friends. Some wanted to film it for TikTok or perform it at a school festival. Others said they were drawn to the gyaru culture of the Heisei era.

4The remaining 67.7 percent said they did not want to try it. Some said they were not good at dancing or felt embarrassed, and others preferred K-pop dances.

5Clubs, where young people once danced parapara, had even less appeal. Only 16.2 percent said they would want to dance it at a club. Some of the others said clubs seemed scary, crowded or too loud. Rumi, a dancer known for parapara, said she opened a parapara school four years ago and that children now dance it.

文法ポイント:関係副詞 where(場所+where+文)

Clubs, where young people once danced parapara, had even less appeal.
