Do Spiders Have REM Sleep?

1Scientists in Germany have found that a small spider sleeps in two different stages. In one stage, its eyes move and its body twitches. This stage is like REM sleep in humans.

2The spider is called Portia fimbriata, and it lives in Australia. An adult is about the size of a coin. It hunts other spiders. At night, it sleeps upside down under its own web.

3A team from the University of Bonn kept each spider in a small dish. Special cameras filmed the spiders in the dark. The team also played sounds and checked how fast the spiders reacted. This helped them tell sleep from just staying still.

4The team also kept the spiders awake at night. The next night, the spiders had more of the REM-like sleep. Scientists call this sleep rebound.

5In humans, dreams often come during REM sleep. But the scientists said they do not know if spiders dream.

The spider is called Portia fimbriata. call A B(A を B と呼ぶ)を受け身にした形。
