Spiders Sleep in Two Stages, Study Finds

1Researchers at the University of Bonn in Germany have found that an Australian jumping spider has two separate stages of sleep. One of them resembles REM sleep in humans, with moving eyes and twitching muscles. The team published its findings in the journal PNAS.

2In humans, REM sleep is the stage linked to rapid eye movements and vivid dreams. In animals with backbones, it has also been connected with learning and memory.

3An adult Portia fimbriata is roughly as big as a one-euro coin. It hunts other spiders and sometimes lures web-building spiders by copying the shaking of a trapped insect. At night, it hangs upside down under a web it has spun and sleeps there.

4The scientists kept each spider in a plastic dish 12 centimeters across. They recorded the spiders for several days and nights under different lighting. Infrared cameras filmed the animals in the dark. The team also played sounds and measured how fast the spiders responded, which helped separate sleep from simple stillness. Brain activity was not measured, so the sleep stages were identified from behavior alone.

5To disturb the spiders' sleep, the researchers put 25 live fruit flies in with them at night. On the recovery night that followed, the total time the spiders spent in REM-like sleep was nearly 80 percent higher than before the disturbance. The researchers said that, as far as they know, this is the first time such a rebound has been shown in an animal without a backbone.

6In 2022, a team led by Daniela Rößler, one of the new study's authors, recorded REM-like movements in another jumping spider. At that time, the team could not confirm that the spiders were actually asleep. The researchers said the new results do not show whether spiders dream. They plan to study more kinds of spiders and the effects of artificial light at night.

本文の it has also been connected with learning and memory(学習や記憶とも結びつけられてきた)や、such a rebound has been shown(そうした取り戻しが示された)がその例。
