Book Week Opens as Survey Shows Kids Torn Between Books and Screens

1Japan's annual Book Week, known as Dokusho Shukan, began on October 27 and runs until November 9. The two weeks include Culture Day, a national holiday on November 3. The campaign started in 1947, and this year marks its 80th run. It is organized by a group that promotes reading.

2A survey released ahead of the event suggests that many children enjoy books but find screens more appealing. The children's research institute of the Hakuhodo Foundation questioned 1,200 students online on August 9. They ranged from fourth graders in elementary school to third-year students in junior high.

3Overall, 69.3 percent said they like reading, but only 12.8 percent said they love it. The share who like reading was higher among elementary school students, at 72.8 percent, than among junior high students, at 65.8 percent. At the same time, 76.5 percent said watching videos or playing games is more fun than reading.

4Reading time was short for many students. Asked how long they read each week, 17.4 percent said not at all, and another 55.2 percent said less than an hour. Among junior high students alone, the share who did not read at all was 22.0 percent.

5The survey also found a link between parents and children. When parents read for at least an hour a week, 91.8 percent of their children said they like reading. Schools played a role as well, since 65.5 percent of the students had borrowed books from a school library in the past year. Even among children who said they do not like reading, 44.3 percent had borrowed books there. The researchers said schools seem to act as a reading safety net that connects children with books, whatever the reading habits at home are like.

文法ポイント:比較級 + than(~より…)

The share who like reading was higher among elementary school students, at 72.8 percent, than among junior high students, at 65.8 percent.
