Book Week Starts in Japan

1Japan's Book Week started on October 27. It will continue until November 9. The event began in 1947, and this is its 80th year.

2Before Book Week, a group in Japan asked 1,200 children about reading. The youngest were fourth graders, and the oldest were third-year junior high students. About 69 percent of them said they like reading.

3But 76.5 percent said videos or games are more fun than books. About 17 percent did not read at all in a week.

4Families also seem to matter. Some parents read for one hour or more a week. In those homes, 91.8 percent of the children said they like reading. School libraries also seem to help. About 65 percent of the children borrowed books from a school library in the past year.

本文の videos or games are more fun than books は「動画やゲームは本より楽しい」。
