1Dictionary.com has chosen maxxing as its Word of the Year for 2026. The online dictionary picked it over four other finalists: affordability, data center, odyssey and unc. Its choice last year was 67, a slang term popular with young people.

2Maxxing is short for maximizing. It describes trying to get the most out of an activity or a part of your life. People can use it alone or attach it to the end of another word. CBS News reported that it now works as a noun, a verb, an adjective and an adverb.

3The word grew out of min-maxing, a term from gaming. Players used it for making a character's strengths so great that its weaknesses no longer mattered. The spelling with an extra x first appeared on Reddit and other online forums. Looksmaxxing, which means improving your appearance, existed as early as 2015.

4Dictionary.com said searches for maxxing have risen sharply over the past year. Sleepmaxxing means getting more and better sleep. Tokenmaxxing means relying on AI tools at work as much as you can. Other forms, such as salmonmaxxing, are meant to be silly.

5Steve Johnson, director of lexicography at the company behind Dictionary.com, said the word shows a culture focused on squeezing as much as possible out of everything. Dictionary.com said some people embrace the term, while others use it as a joke. Some even use it for stepping back, as in normalmaxxing, a reaction to the pressure to improve everything.
