1Dictionary.com, an online dictionary, has picked maxxing as its Word of the Year for 2026. Last year, it chose 67.

2Maxxing is short for maximizing. It means doing something as much as you can. You can use it alone or add it to the end of other words.

3For example, sleepmaxxing means trying to get more and better sleep. Tokenmaxxing means using AI at work as much as possible. Staying home on a Friday night with movies and snacks can be called cozymaxxing.

4The word comes from the world of games. Players used min-maxing to mean making a character's strong points even stronger. The double-x spelling first appeared on Reddit and other websites.

5Dictionary.com said searches for maxxing went up very quickly over the past year. Other words on its final list included unc and odyssey. Young people use unc, short for uncle, for an older person who seems out of touch.

全文訳

1ネットの辞書 Dictionary.com（ディクショナリー・ドットコム）が、maxxing（マキシング）を2026年の「今年の言葉」に選びました。去年は 67（シックスセブン）を選んでいました。

2maxxing は maximizing（最大にすること）を短くした言葉です。何かをできるだけたくさん、とことんやる、という意味です。それだけで使うことも、ほかの言葉のうしろにつけることもできます。

3たとえば sleepmaxxing は、もっと長く、もっとよく眠ろうとすることです。tokenmaxxing は、仕事で AI をできるだけたくさん使うことです。家で映画を見てお菓子を食べる、ふつうの金曜の夜を cozymaxxing と呼ぶこともあります。

4この言葉はゲームの世界から来ています。プレイヤーは、キャラクターの得意なところをさらにのばすことを min-maxing と呼んでいました。x が2つのつづりは、まず Reddit（レディット）などのサイトに現れました。

5Dictionary.com によると、maxxing を調べる人はこの1年でとても速く増えました。最後の候補には、ほかに unc や odyssey（オデッセイ）などがありました。unc は uncle（おじさん）を短くした言葉で、若い人が「流行がわかっていない年上の人」を指して使います。

文法ポイント：動名詞（～ing で「～すること」）

動詞に ing をつけると「～すること」という名詞のはたらきをする。本文の It means doing something as much as you can. では、doing something が means の目的語（「何かをすること」を意味する）になっている。
