The Moon Is Getting a Little Smaller
1The moon is slowly getting smaller, a new study says. Its radius has become about 45 meters shorter. That is about the height of a 15-story building.
2Scientists studied photos from a NASA spacecraft that goes around the moon. They found more than 10,000 young faults on the surface. A fault is a crack where the ground has moved.
3The inside of the moon is cooling down. When the inside cools, the moon gets smaller, and the surface gets pushed together. This makes steps in the ground, like wrinkles.
4The change is very slow. It took hundreds of millions of years. October 26 is the day of the full moon. People call it the Hunter's Moon.
