More Than 10,000 Faults Show How Much the Moon Has Shrunk

1The moon has shrunk by about 45 meters in radius over the last 400 to 800 million years, according to a new study in The Planetary Science Journal. The team gave a range of 42 to 46 meters. The study was led by Thomas Watters, a geologist at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in the United States.

2Watters and his colleagues used images taken by a camera on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, a spacecraft that has been circling the moon for more than 17 years. Their survey includes more than 8,900 cliffs called lobate scarps. The team combined them with more than 2,600 small ridges recorded in earlier work. Together, these young faults number more than 10,000.

3The faults formed because the inside of the moon is cooling. As the interior cools, the moon contracts, and the crust is pushed together until it breaks and forms steep steps. The researchers then used the size of the faults to estimate how much the moon had shrunk.

4The process is extremely slow. The researchers estimated a rate of roughly 6 to 11 centimeters every million years. Watters said existing faults are probably still growing and new ones are probably still forming. Faults like these can cause moonquakes, and knowing where and how often moonquakes happen could help NASA plan for people to stay on the moon for a long time.

5The moon becomes full at 1:12 p.m. Japan time on Monday, October 26. October's full moon is known as the Hunter's Moon. The name is linked to hunters, who could see animals in the fields by its bright light after the harvest.

本文の a spacecraft that has been circling the moon for more than 17 years(17年以上ずっと月のまわりを回り続けている探査機)がその例。
