Why a Haunted House Can Bring Friends Closer
1Visitors to a haunted house in Florida felt closer to the people they went with when they were more scared, a series of studies has found. The research was led by Jane Wiley, who did the work as an undergraduate at the University of Florida. It was published this year in the journal Emotion.
2The team surveyed visitors at the Fear Garden, a haunted attraction in Gainesville, over three Halloween seasons. In the first survey, 986 people rated how scared they were and how much the haunted house had brought them closer to the group member they were closest to. Those who reported more fear also reported feeling closer. Holding hands, talking and enjoying the experience were also linked to stronger feelings of closeness.
3The effect was not limited to the group member people felt closest to. In another survey of 554 visitors, about 45 percent said the haunted house made them feel closer to the group member they were least close to. About 64 percent said it brought their whole group closer. However, when the researchers measured closeness before and after the haunted house, the scores barely changed.
4Interviews with 20 guests helped explain the gap. The guests described bonding afterward, for example by talking about the scariest moments while driving home together. Tara Perreault, a co-author who is now a doctoral student at the University of South Florida, spoke to the Florida news outlet WUSF. She said much of the bonding came from processing the experience with the group. She also said heart rates inside a haunted house can easily reach 180 beats per minute.
5The researchers noted several limits. They surveyed only people who had already chosen to visit, in a loud and busy area. The studies also looked only at haunted houses, so the results may not apply to horror movies. Wiley said the team hopes to run experiments to test whether time to reflect afterward actually causes people to grow closer.

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 who(人をうしろから説明する)
