Petting a Dog Before the Next Test

1Petting a dog may help people stay calmer in a later stressful test, a study from Austria suggests. The study was done at the University of Innsbruck.

2The researchers studied 64 dog owners and their dogs. Each owner took two hard tests in a lab. They answered quick quiz questions and did math in their heads.

3After each test, the owners rested for five minutes with their dogs. One time, they were allowed to touch the dog. The other time, the dog was on a short leash, too far away to touch.

4Petting did not help the owners calm down faster right after a test. But owners who petted their dogs after the first test had slower heartbeats during the second test. Their brain waves also showed less stress.

5Only 64 owners took part, and most of them were women. The scientists said touching should be something the dog wants, too.

Petting did not help the owners calm down faster
