Petting a Dog Dampened Stress Responses in a Later Test

1Dog owners who petted their dogs after a stressful task showed calmer body responses when they faced a second stressful task, researchers in Austria have reported. The team, from the University of Innsbruck, published the study in the journal Biological Psychology.

2Sixty-four dog owners brought their dogs to the lab. Each owner went through the same routine twice: a rest, a 10-minute stress test and a five-minute recovery period with the dog. The test asked them to answer general-knowledge questions within five seconds and to count backward, while a staff member on video gave only critical feedback.

3The dog was in the room only during recovery. In one round, owners were free to touch their dogs, and they spent about 64 percent of the time doing so. In the other, the dog was kept on a short leash out of reach, though owners could still talk to it and look at it.

4The researchers measured brain waves, heart rate and heart rate variability. The stress test raised heart rate and lowered heart rate variability. Touch did not make recovery faster. However, owners who could touch their dogs after the first test had a lower heart rate, higher heart rate variability and smaller stress-related changes in brain waves during the second test. Owners who first recovered without touch did not show the same effects.

5The owners' own ratings of their stress did not match the body measurements well. Most of the 64 owners were women, and the effect on the second test came from an exploratory analysis, so a new study will need to check it.

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 who(人を説明する)

Dog owners who petted their dogs after a stressful task は「ストレスのかかる課題のあとに犬をなでた飼い主」という意味で、who 以下が Dog owners を説明している。Owners who first recovered without touch
