Live-Action Street Fighter Film Tops the North American Box Office

1A live-action film based on the Street Fighter games by the Japanese company Capcom has opened at No. 1 in North America. Over its first weekend, from October 16 to 18, the movie earned an estimated 31 million dollars at 3,575 theaters in the United States and Canada. Paramount Pictures released the film in both countries. Its worldwide total for the weekend reached about 51 million dollars, which means roughly 20 million dollars came from outside North America. All of these figures are early estimates.

2The movie opened in Japan on the same day, October 16, in 862 theaters. In its first three days, 78,676 people went to see it, and ticket sales came to about 134 million yen. That works out to about 91 viewers per theater. Among the foreign films that opened in Japan that week, it ranked first.

3The film was produced by the studio Legendary together with Capcom. It was directed by Kitao Sakurai. The story is set in 1993, and it centers on Ryu and Ken, two fighters from the games.

4The original Street Fighter came out in August 1987 as an arcade game. Its sequel, Street Fighter II, followed in 1991 and set off a boom. This is not the first time the series has become a Hollywood movie. An earlier Street Fighter film came out in 1994, 32 years before the new one.

Its worldwide total for the weekend reached about 51 million dollars, which means roughly 20 million dollars came from outside North America.
