Most Students Keep Their Test Rank, but Some Change Sharply
1Most students in two Japanese cities kept roughly the same rank on achievement tests over three to four years, a Tohoku University study has found. About 9 percent, however, moved up or down sharply. The paper appeared in the journal Scientific Reports on September 28. Tohoku University announced the results on October 14.
2The researchers followed 16,946 public school students in grades four to nine, in one city in Miyagi Prefecture and one in Tokyo. Miyagi students were tracked for four years, Tokyo students for three. The team used yearly tests and surveys on study time, homework, sleep, messaging apps and more. The test scores were turned into standard scores, which show a student's place in the grade, not the raw score.
3In Miyagi, about 90 percent of 12,587 students stayed within 10 points of their first-year score in year four. But 482 students climbed more than 10 points, and 637 dropped more than 10. The climbers started with the lowest average of four groups, around 40, and reached the low 50s. The team noted these results cover only the study period and do not mean grades are fixed for life.
4First-year survey answers alone did not clearly separate the two groups. Changes in the answers by the third year separated them better. The climbers' study time rose on both weekdays and days off, and more of them reported a concrete goal for the future. More of them also said they reviewed lessons and solved practice problems repeatedly. Students whose scores fell tended to forget homework more often and spend more time on messaging apps.
5The researchers pointed out that this was an observational study. Because the changes happened alongside the score shifts, the team cannot tell whether they were causes or results. Nor does the study show that more study or less app time will lift grades, the team said. Students who stayed at a high level more often ate breakfast, used the library and got encouragement from family.

文法ポイント:whether A or B(A なのか B なのか)
本文の the team cannot tell whether they were causes or results は「変化が原因なのか結果なのか、区別できない」。
