Can Your Test Rank Change?

1Most children in a Japanese study kept about the same rank on school tests. But some children moved up or down a lot.

2A team at Tohoku University followed about 17,000 children for three or four years. The children were in grades four to nine. They took tests every year and answered questions about daily life.

3The team looked at each child's standard score. This score shows how a child did compared with others in the grade. About 9 percent of the children moved more than 10 points. About 4 percent went up, and about 5 percent went down.

4Children with rising scores studied longer. More of them said they had a clear goal for the future. Children with falling scores tended to forget homework more often. They also tended to spend more time on messaging apps.

5The researchers said the study only found links. It cannot show what caused the changes in scores. Children who stayed near the top often ate breakfast and used the library.

Children with falling scores tended to forget homework more often.
