1Japan is set to name its first Living National Treasures in a new field called lifestyle culture. On October 16, the Council for Cultural Affairs recommended three masters of Kyoto cuisine, sake brewing and ikebana to the education minister. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi shared the news on X, and her post received more than 10,000 likes.

2Living National Treasures are people whose traditional skills are recognized by the government. Until now, the title was limited to performing arts, such as kabuki, and craft techniques, such as pottery. The Agency for Cultural Affairs changed the system last year to add lifestyle culture. Masters of food culture have never been chosen before.

3Eiichi Takahashi, who is 87, is the 14th-generation head of Hyotei, a long-established restaurant in Kyoto. He took over the restaurant at the age of 28. He was chosen for kaiseki, a style of Kyoto course meal that took shape in the Edo period. He switched from dried bonito to dried tuna for his soup stock.

4Naohiko Noguchi, 93, lives in the town of Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture. He has worked as a toji, or master sake brewer, for more than 60 years. Sen'ei Ikenobo, also 93, became the 45th head of the Ikenobo school of ikebana in 1945. He was chosen for rikka, said to be the oldest style of ikebana. Rikka uses many kinds of plants to show natural scenery.

5Behind the new field is a drop in the number of people who carry on these traditions. According to the Nikkei newspaper, the number of ryotei, traditional Japanese restaurants, fell by about 90 percent in the 10 years from 2006. The paper said toji numbers are now one-fifth or less of their 1960s peak. Each Living National Treasure receives a special grant of 2 million yen a year from the government. If the plan is approved, Japan will have 111 Living National Treasures.

本文の people whose traditional skills are recognized by the government は「伝統の技が国に正式に認められた人」。
