First Living National Treasures for Food and Flowers

1Japan is going to name its first Living National Treasures for food and flower arranging. A government council recommended three masters for the title on October 16. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi shared the news on X, and her post got more than 10,000 likes.

2Living National Treasures are people with special traditional skills. Until now, they came only from performing arts like kabuki and crafts like pottery. Last year, the government added a new area called lifestyle culture.

3Eiichi Takahashi, 87, is the 14th head of Hyotei, an old restaurant in Kyoto. Naohiko Noguchi, 93, has worked as a master sake brewer for more than 60 years. Sen'ei Ikenobo, also 93, is the head of Ikenobo, a school of ikebana.

4Fewer people now carry on these traditions. The Nikkei newspaper reported that people with ikebana as a hobby fell by about 60 percent in the 30 years to 2021. If the plan is approved, Japan will have 111 Living National Treasures.

文法ポイント:be going to(~することになっている・~する予定)
