Finnish Study Finds Screen Time Linked to Sharper Teen Thinking

1Children who built up more screen time from childhood into their teens performed better on thinking tests as adolescents, a study from Finland has found. The University of Jyvaskyla announced the results in August. The study was published in the journal Pediatric Exercise Science.

2The research was part of a long-running project on children's physical activity and diet, run by the University of Jyvaskyla and the University of Eastern Finland. It followed 260 children, 124 girls and 136 boys, who were six to nine years old when the project began. Eight years later, their average age was 15.8. The teens then took computer tests that measured learning, attention and working memory.

3Those with more total screen time since childhood had better overall scores. The researchers also tracked physical activity using sensors and questionnaires. Among girls, more light physical activity since childhood was linked to better working memory. Among boys, the same was true for more guided exercise.

4Some results surprised the team. Teens who reported less unsupervised activity did better on the tests. Activity measured by the sensors was not linked to the test results at all. The researchers said sensors cannot tell what kind of activity a person is doing.

5The lead researcher, Petri Jalanko, said what young people do on screens likely matters more than the hours. He said parents and teachers should encourage screen use that involves problem-solving, creativity and learning. Because the study only observed the children, it cannot prove that screens caused the better scores. The team said experiments are needed to test cause and effect.

文法ポイント:比較級 + than(AはBより~)

「AのほうがBより~だ」は 比較級 + than B。本文の what young people do on screens likely matters more than the hours は「画面で何をするかのほうが、時間の長さより大事だろう」。 A is more important than B.
