MMX Aims to Return the First Samples From the Mars System

1Japan's space agency, JAXA, is set to launch a probe on Oct. 20 that aims to bring back sand from Phobos, one of the two moons of Mars. The Martian Moons eXploration probe, or MMX, will ride on an H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima at 4:41 a.m. If the launch is delayed, JAXA has kept Oct. 21 to Nov. 7 as backup days.

2Phobos is only about 20 to 30 kilometers across and circles about 6,000 kilometers above the surface of Mars. MMX is expected to reach the area around Mars about a year after launch. It will study both Phobos and the other moon, Deimos, before touching down on Phobos to collect more than 10 grams of material. That is about 100 times the 0.1 grams that Hayabusa2 originally planned to collect from an asteroid.

3Scientists hope the samples will help explain how the two moons formed. The probe has three parts, one for the trip out, one for exploring and one for the trip home, and weighs 4,480 kilograms at launch. Its return capsule is scheduled to reach Earth in fiscal 2031. If the plan succeeds, it will be the first time samples have been returned from the Mars system.

4The launch may also be visible across Japan, JAXA said. About five and a half minutes after liftoff, sunlight is expected to hit the rocket while the sky on the ground is still dark. In past launches, rockets lit this way have looked about as bright as the brightest star in the night sky. JAXA advises viewers to look low in the sky, about 10 to 20 degrees above the horizon, which is roughly one or two fists held at arm's length.

If the plan succeeds, it will be the first time ...
