Chiikawa Film Climbs Back to the Top of the Box Office
An animated Chiikawa film has returned to the top of Japan's box office in its 12th weekend, nearly three months after it opened. The film, whose Japanese title means the secret of the mermaid island, ranked first for the weekend of October 9 to 11. It was the first time in three weeks that it had led the national ranking.
Around 375,000 tickets were sold over those three days, bringing in about 563 million yen. By October 12, ticket sales had passed 17.9 billion yen, and more than 12.29 million tickets had been sold. That is roughly one ticket for every 10 people living in Japan, although many fans have gone more than once.
The movie has been strong from the start. After it opened on July 24, it earned about 2.24 billion yen and drew around 1.51 million viewers in its first three days, according to its distributor, Toho. In early October, its total stood at about 17.1 billion yen. Since then, it has kept adding money week after week.
Chiikawa began as a comic posted online by an artist known as Nagano, who also wrote the film's story. The name is short for a Japanese phrase meaning something small and cute. The film was directed by Kei Oikawa, who is known for the Uma Musume anime series, and animated by the studio Cypic.
Theaters have also kept fans coming back by handing out gifts. A sixth round of gifts, small charm figures of the main characters, started on October 10.
